Historic Home Kitchen Remodel in Madison, WI

REMODELING NEED

Built in 1914, this historic Arts and Crafts home had a kitchen that no longer met the needs of its new owners. The existing layout and outdated systems could not support the large, gourmet eat-in kitchen they envisioned for everyday cooking, dining, and gathering.

As part of a whole-home remodel, the homeowners wanted a more spacious and functional kitchen with modern amenities while preserving the architectural character of the Charles H. Bunting House and respecting the historic requirements of Madison’s University Heights Historic District. The challenge was to create a kitchen suited to the way they wanted to live today while ensuring the new design felt appropriate within the century-old home.

DESIGN SOLUTION

The kitchen was redesigned to give the homeowners the spacious, functional eat-in kitchen they wanted while respecting the architectural character of their historic 1914 home. As part of the larger renovation and expansion, Sweeney Design Remodel carefully planned the kitchen to accommodate modern cooking, storage, and gathering needs while ensuring the new space felt appropriate within the Charles H. Bunting House.

Natural cherry Caliber cabinetry brings warmth and craftsmanship to the kitchen, complemented by White Horizon granite countertops and a 5-inch granite backsplash. Brushed nickel hardware, a farmhouse sink with a Ferguson pull-down faucet, double oven, and built-in microwave provide the functionality the homeowners wanted without detracting from the room’s timeless character.

Daltile Ayers Rock Majestic Mound glazed porcelain tile flooring was installed in a grid pattern, providing a durable surface while connecting the kitchen visually with other remodeled areas of the home. Together, the cabinetry, finishes, fixtures, and architectural detailing create a kitchen designed for modern-day living that still feels at home within this historic Madison property.

Challenge

The challenge was creating the large, gourmet eat-in kitchen the homeowners wanted while respecting the architectural character of the 1914 home and meeting the requirements of Madison’s Landmarks Commission. The new kitchen needed to provide the space, storage, appliances, and functionality expected in a modern home while feeling appropriate within the historic Charles H. Bunting House and the larger renovation.

RESULT

The completed kitchen gives the homeowners the spacious, functional gathering place they envisioned, with increased storage, modern appliances, and room for everyday dining and entertaining. Thoughtful material and finish selections help the new kitchen feel appropriate to the home’s 1914 Arts and Crafts character while providing the conveniences of a modern kitchen. The result fulfills the homeowners’ wish list while remaining cohesive with the larger historic renovation.
