Located in Lake Monona with a view of the Wisconsin State Capitol, this family’s home was in a prime location. Surprisingly, however, their kitchen was designed with a structural load bearing wall that prevented them from seeing it. When this couple came to Sweeney looking to remodel their home, they were looking to address this weight-bearing wall and wanted a solution for opening up their main living area. Opening up the kitchen and transforming the first floor layout required a new design, to include the laundry room, family room and entryway, and updating their outdated cabinetry and appliances.
Removing the structural load bearing wall, utilizing a solid beam, and reconfiguring the kitchen to include an island, allowed this family to enjoy the view of the capitol they longed to see. Reconfiguring the space also gave them improved functionality and much needed storage space.
With visions of an urban chique design, the kitchen was designed with the two-tone cabinets by Denise Quade Custom Cabinetry, London Sky colored Corian Quartz countertops, artisan pantry barn doors, and new commercial grade appliances.
To tie everything together, we designed custom Sheago walnut wood flooring throughout the main level, and added a beautiful cable rail system on the staircase, which was designed and fabricated by Custom Metals of Madison, WI. A classic craft entry door, and repeat artisan barn doors in the laundry room complete the look.
The family now enjoys the sought-after view of the State Capitol from their main living areas, opening up their space to more light, more room, more functional living space—for many years to come.
“I couldn’t be happier with the just completed foyer – kitchen/breakfast room – laundry remodel. There were many “moving parts” to the project that came together for an amazing result. Tim, lead carpenter Jim, the office staff and subs were all great to work with – good communicators, confident and optimistic. The team was meticulous in cleaning up and protecting the rest of the house from dust and wear and tear. The craftsmanship and quality are first rate. I certainly recommend Sweeney Construction and look forward to working with them on future projects.”—James S.
