Remodeling Need

The owners of this downtown Madison condo were eager to refresh their space, making it more functional, stylish, and suited to their lifestyle. While their kitchen had served them well, it felt outdated and lacked the contemporary, streamlined look they wanted for entertaining. Their plan included replacing all countertops, cabinetry, backsplash, sink, faucet, and hardware while lowering the peninsula to create a more open, cohesive layout.

In the primary bathroom, they envisioned replacing the oversized soaking tub with a spacious, low-entry walk-in shower featuring modern tile and built-in storage.

Beyond the kitchen and bathroom, they also sought a flooring upgrade throughout the condo. As dog owners, they needed a durable yet stylish option that could withstand daily wear and seamlessly complement their design vision.

Design Solution

With the condo’s structural limitations in mind, the remodel maintained existing plumbing and electrical locations while optimizing space and function. The kitchen underwent a complete transformation, featuring warm Cinnamon-finished wood cabinetry by Plato, Inverness Gold quartz countertops, and a bold Kintsugi Blue tile backsplash. Lowering the peninsula to match the main countertop created a seamless workspace and open feel. A hidden trash system, LED under-cabinet lighting, and gold hardware-enhanced functionality and style, while Nyra London Tulise glass pendant lights added a modern focal point. Special attention was given to venting when installing the induction cooktop and new lighting, accommodating high-rise condo constraints.

The primary bathroom was redesigned into a spa-like retreat. Replacing the soaking tub with an expanded shower—finished with elegant Soci-Reality Palm subway tile—allowed for a built-in bench, recessed niches, and a hydro rail system with a handheld showerhead and foot shelf. A custom double vanity in a rich Briar finish with vessel sinks maximized counter space and storage. Recessed can lights and mirror-mounted lighting replaced an outdated lit shelf, brightening the space. Heated flooring beneath gray matte tile provided added warmth and comfort.

To unify the home, luxury vinyl plank in a warm Spice Rack finish was installed throughout the kitchen, entryway, and great room, complemented by solid wood trim for a refined, polished aesthetic.

Challenge

Working within the constraints of a 10-story condo presented unique challenges. With plumbing and electrical systems fixed in place, the remodel had to be designed around existing fixture locations while achieving a fresh, functional layout. Installing an induction cooktop required careful venting considerations to ensure proper airflow within the building’s structural limitations. Additionally, the uneven subfloor needed leveling before new flooring could be installed. Through meticulous planning and expert craftsmanship, these challenges were successfully navigated without compromising design or quality.

Result

This renovation completely transformed the condo into a modern, inviting, and highly functional space. The kitchen is now a perfect hub for entertaining, featuring warm wood tones, striking tilework, and an improved layout. The bathroom exudes relaxation and luxury, with a spacious walk-in shower, custom vanity, and enhanced lighting creating a true spa-like retreat. New flooring seamlessly ties the condo together, offering both durability and style to match the homeowners’ needs.

By thoughtfully balancing design, functionality, and the unique challenges of high-rise remodeling, this project resulted in a sophisticated, highly personalized home that beautifully reflects the client’s vision.
