REMODELING NEED
The homeowners of this classic center hall colonial loved their mature garden retreat, framed by two beautiful timber pergolas—one large, one small—that had stood for decades. Over the years, the wood began to rot and fail, but the couple wanted to keep everything just as it was—the same layout, the same proportions, and the same timeless feel.
Adding to the challenge was a cherished wisteria vine that had been growing through the main pergola for decades. It was both sentimental and stunning, but its survival was uncertain once the old structure came down.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Over the course of two months, both pergolas were carefully taken apart and rebuilt in the same footprint using durable cedar. Every detail was crafted to echo the original design and complement the home’s classic colonial style.
The biggest challenge came with replacing the old, buried posts—without harming the wisteria’s delicate root system. The team used protective barriers and hand-digging techniques to keep the vine safe while ensuring the new structures were strong and long-lasting.
RESULT
The rebuilt pergolas now offer the same inviting garden charm, just stronger, safer, and ready to stand up to the elements for decades to come. Best of all, the beloved wisteria was saved. Although it had to be trimmed back during construction, its roots remained untouched and will soon weave their way through the new cedar framework, allowing the garden’s story to continue without missing a beat.
