REMODELING NEED
The homeowner of this classic center hall colonial adored her mature garden retreat, framed by two beautiful timber pergolas—one large and one small—that had stood gracefully for decades. Over time, the wood began to rot and fail, but she wanted to preserve everything she loved about the space—the same layout, the same proportions, and the same timeless charm.
Adding to the challenge was a cherished wisteria vine that had been growing through the main pergola for years. It held deep sentimental value and was a stunning focal point in the garden, but its survival was uncertain once the old structure came down.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Over the course of two months, both pergolas were carefully dismantled and rebuilt in the same footprint using durable cedar. Every element was designed to echo the original architecture while adding subtle enhancements that elevated the overall aesthetic. Custom rafter end detailing and new trim accents on the columns brought an extra level of refinement, complementing the home’s classic colonial character.
The most delicate part of the project involved replacing the old, buried posts without disturbing the wisteria’s root system. The team used protective barriers and hand-digging techniques to safeguard the vine while ensuring the new structures were solid and long-lasting.
RESULT
The rebuilt pergolas now bring renewed strength and beauty to the garden, blending seamlessly with the home’s historic charm. The enhanced trim and rafter details add a touch of craftsmanship that makes the design truly shine. Best of all, the beloved wisteria was preserved—trimmed back temporarily during construction but left with its roots intact, ready to climb and bloom once again, continuing the garden’s timeless story.
