Madison, WI, March, 2024 – Expert carpenters and project developers from Sweeney Design Remodel were proud to offer local high school students guidance and support for alternative career paths at two recent Madison Trades Career Days.

“My colleagues and I were thrilled to answer questions and provide hands-on experiences to students interested in the trades,” exclaims Brett Clarke, project developer at Sweeney Construction. “I was joined by skilled carpenters Dave Abreu and Ryan Whiting, together working with students on techniques, and demonstrating how they could have a successful career as a carpenter.”

Madison Trades Careers Days are sponsored by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and took place this year at Vel Phillips Memorial High School in Madison on March 19th, and Madison East High School on March 20th. The events showcased apprenticeship programs, 1–2-year technical degree options, and exposure to many areas of the trades that don’t require education past a high school diploma. Representatives of NARI were also in attendance, along with electricians, plumbers, carpenters, tile installers, and HVAC techs. Each area offered live experiences and offered students mementos and trinkets to take back with them from the events.

“Helping our community is one of our core values,” admits Tim Sweeney, President. “So I was delighted Brett, Dave, and Ryan actively participated and shared their expertise. Having a positive impact on students who might not have the option of going to a four-year university is so important. Our skilled carpenters were privileged to be able to bring to life other successful career paths, available right out of high school for our local teens.”

“We’re proud to not only do award-winning work remodeling homes throughout Dane County,” adds Brett, “but also providing our community with volunteer services wherever they are needed. To bring that heartfelt goal to life, I’m on the Madison Metropolitan School District Construction & Woodworking Advisory Committee, and we meet quarterly to develop ideas for Trades Day. This year was a terrific experience for all of us, and we hope the high schoolers felt inspired!”
